Recognising abelian Sylow subgroups in finite groups

Given a finite group G, Brauer asked if it was possible to
determine from the character table of the group whether or not G has an abelian Sylow p-subgroup for some prime p. In this talk we shall present a theorem which gives a positive answer when p is not 3 or 5. In addition we shall discuss the case for p = 3 and 5.
