Homomorphisms between mapping class groups are tightly tied to the topology of the surface. More strikingly, perhaps, maps between relatively slender subgroups are also highly constrained. I’ll focus mainly on this second point and describe work with Alexandra Pettet and Juan Souto in which we prove, in particular, that (except in low genus) the automorphism group (and abstract commensurator) of each term of the Andreadakis-Johnson filtration is the ambient mapping class group, and likewise the terms of the lower central series of the Torelli group.
