If you have a question about this talk, please contact Matthew Clarke.

At the start of the 20th century, William Burnside asked whether a finitely generated group, in which every element has finite order, could be infinite. The answer to this question is yes. However, if we replace “finitely generated” by “finitely presented”, the answer is unknown. I will talk about some progress that has been made towards answering this related question.

This talk is part of the Junior Algebra and Number Theory seminar series.
