In this mainly expository talk I shall discuss polynomial sequences in groups, especially Leibman’s work establishing their group structure. Some examples will then illustrate how algebraic properties of polynomial sequences in a nilpotent Lie group yield basic topological/geometric properties of an associated nilmanifold that are among the main facts underlying the connection between nilmanifolds and arithmetic combinatorics.
