If you have a question about this talk, please contact Professor Grae Worster. The mechanism for generation of magnetic field in Earth’s core (and the interior of other planets) is poorly understood. The wide range of temporal scales on which dynamics occurs is vast (with the viscous timescale being many orders of magnitude longer than a rotational period. For this reason, computational models are difficult to push into geophysically meaningful regimes (though much can be learned). In this talk I shall describe two approaches to understanding these dynamos. The first utilises the construction of asymptotic models in a plane layer, based on the anisotropy of flows that naturally occur in rapidly rotating system. The second uses techniques from wall-bounded shear flows to determine “minimal seeds” of a magnetic field for dynamo action in such rapidly rotating systems.
