Is it possible to find a particle theory that behaves like a string theory? In this talk I review attempts to do this in the past and present more recent activity that uses the world line description of particle physics. This formalism allows the definition of a class of world-line theories that have the same UV complete properties as string theory. It turns out that these theories are related to a class of ghost-free infinite derivative theories inspired by string field theory. It is also possible to find particle theories that reproduce the dominant behaviour of string scattering amplitudes at high energies.
