I will review the relevance of the lightest scalar mesons in our understanding of Hadron sepctroscopy. In particular why their non-quark-antiquark nature and even their existence have been under strong debate for over 60 years.
I will explain how this debate has been settled in the last few years by means of new data, effective theories and dispersive approaches and I will discuss the remaining open questions in this topic.
