Just as abelian categories are an abstract setting for modules over a ring, semi-abelian categories are designed to be an abstract setting for groups and similar algebraic structures. I will give an introduction to semi-abelian categories and show how to define commutativity and semi-direct products in them in a way familiar from groups.
