One usually thinks of the topological fundamental group of a space as loops at some basepoint modulo basepoint homotopy. However, there is another way to view it, namely as an automorphism group of a functor. This perspective has been used in defining similar objects in other branches of mathematics, e.g the etale fundamental group of algebraic geometry. In this talk I will discuss the theory of Tannakian categories, in which this alternative point of view on the fundamental group finds a natural home.
