Contact and symplectic geometry are very much related. An instance of this relationship is the following. To any contact manifold M can be associated a symplectic manifold SM called its symplectization. Topologically, SM is just R x M. We will explain that some information is lost in the process: there are contact manifolds (of any odd dimension greater than or equal to 5) which are not diffeomorphic but have symplectomorphic symplectizations.
