Extremal black holes are exceptional solutions of Einstein’s equations that arise on the phase transition between gravitational collapse and dispersion. In this talk, I will discuss forthcoming work proving the codimension-one nonlinear asymptotic stability of the extremal Reissner–Nordström family of black holes in the spherically symmetric Einstein–Maxwell-neutral scalar field model, up to and including the event horizon. This work rigorously confirms numerical results of Murata—Reall—Tanahashi from 2013. Joint work with Yannis Angelopoulos (Caltech) and Christoph Kehle (MIT).
