Abstract: Recently there has been a lot of interest in results which say that a finite simple group is a product of M of its subgroups of certain type, where the number M is (at least up to a multiplicative constant) as small as possible. I will survey (some of) the applications of such results and formulate an ambitious general conjecture, which with M. Liebeck and A. Shalev we have proved in some (very special) cases.
