Null coordinates have been used in numerical relativity in spherical symmetry, in gravitational wave extraction, and in simulating adS-black hole spacetime. I review the structure of the equations and standard gauge choices. Then I focus on gravitational collapse simulations beyond spherical symmetry where the time slices are null cones emerging from a regular central worldline. I show how to deal with problems at the centre, and how to adapt the coordinates to critical collapse. I present a well-posedness result, and first simulations of axisymmetric scalar field critical collapse.
