I shall give an overview of the Cauchy problem
for the Einstein equations of general relativity,
starting from early understanding of their hyperbolicity properties (i.e. the “wave” aspect of the equations and its relation to both local determinism and gravitational radiation far away) and ending with a selection of some of the most important open problems in the field concerning stability and singularities.
