Horndeski theories have received a lot of attention as they are fairly simple modifications of General Relativity. However, these theories can only be considered viable if they possess a well-posed initial value formulation. For diffeomorphism-covariant theories (such as General Relativity and Horndeski theories) this property depends on the choice of gauge. It was demonstrated recently that in a generalization of the harmonic gauge, most Horndeski theories are not well-posed. In this talk, I will discuss some recent results on the well-posedness of Horndeski theories in some other formulations.
