The problem of determining the decomposition numbers of the symmetric groups seems to get harder the more we learn about it. Some success has been had for blocks of small defect; in particular, for defect 2 there is a nice combinatorial formula for the decomposition numbers due to Richards. I will describe this, and then talk about my attempts to find an analogous result for defect 2 blocks of double covers of symmetric groups.
