The Consultant Outcomes Publication (COP) is an NHS England initiative to publish outcome data for named doctors, in particular surgical success rates. As ‘outlying’ surgeons will be publicly identified, some careful statistical techniques are necessary to try to avoid false positives, taking into account both differing case-mix, unmeasured risk factors, and the perils of ‘multiple testing’.
