A longstanding open problem in the representation theory of finite groups is to determine the generic character tables of all finite reductive groups; these encompass matrix groups such as GL_n(q), SL_n(q), Sp_{2n}(q), SO_n(q), etc. In this talk I will give an overview of ongoing work whose goal is to obtain new values of irreducible characters for finite reductive groups at unipotent elements.
