Homotopy-theoretic methods and ideas are becoming ever more commonplace in mathematics. Though classical homotopy theory is defined in terms of topological spaces, in practice what one often uses is the homotopy theory of simplicial sets. I will try to give a self-contained introduction to the latter. Prior experience of algebraic topology – or for that matter, point set topology – will be neither assumed nor required.
