We describe the propagation of volcanic intrusions driven by buoyancy and influenced by wind. The framework will allow accurate forecasting of the spreading rate of future volcanic ash clouds, of central importance to aviation safety. The presentation will be illustrated by colour displays of real eruptions and simple desk-top experiments.
