The extension of the inverse scattering transform, due to Fokas, can be used to for a variety of problems and purposes. I will discuss two examples: an application to the study of some non-self-adjoint linear operators, and the explicit solution of a class of boundary value problems for the most important nonlinear elliptic integrable PDE , the so-called elliptic sine-Gordon equation.
