I aim to offer a gentle introduction to Hecke algebras and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. I will define from scratch prerequisite concepts such as Coxeter and Weyl groups and (crystallographic) root systems, before introducing Hecke algebras and the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis and providing some background information. The focus of the talk will then shift to matters concerning the explicit computation of the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials and I will do either S_3 or D_8 as an example. This talk has been prepared (together with Jay Taylor, Aberdeen) as an instructional (rather than a research) talk, to be given at the forthcoming workshop “Sheaves in Representation Theory” (Isle of Skye).

This talk is part of the Junior Algebra and Number Theory seminar series.
