We will begin by outlining how symplectic topology can help us to
understand families of smooth algebraic varieties and conclude by
illustrating this philosophy in cases where it works well, including
low-rank Del Pezzo surfaces and A_n-Milnor fibres. This week’s talk is
brought to you by the number 4 and the theory of pseudoholomorphic curves.
