In 2007, Favre and Jonsson showed that the first dynamical degree of any polynomial transformation of the complex affine plane is a quadratic integer. We show that the result still holds for any endomorphism f of any affine surface X_0. In this talk, I will present the main tool of the proof which is the use of valuations and explain the relation between the dynamics of f over X_0 and the dynamics of f over the space of valuations over X_0 centered at infinity.
