I will discuss the problem of subtraction of infrared singularities for
scattering amplitudes and cross sections relevant for collider phenomenology.
In particular, I will focus on the relation between the factorisation of soft and
collinear poles in fixed-angle scattering amplitudes and the construction
of local counterterms for singular contributions to real radiation. This
approach leads to general definitions of soft and collinear counterterms
to all orders in perturbation theory, and suggests promising simplifications
for the construction of subtraction algorithms beyond NLO .
