A long-standing open problem in the representation theory of finite groups is to determine the generic character tables of all finite reductive groups; these encompass matrix groups such as GL_n(q), SL_n(q), Sp_{2n}(q), SO_n(q), etc. In this talk I will give an overview of ongoing work whose goal is to obtain new values of irreducible characters for finite reductive groups at unipotent elements.

This talk is part of the Algebra and Representation Theory Seminar series.
