To each filtration of the coordinate ring of a variety one can associate a certain weight. K-stability means that for each filtration this weight is positive, and K-instability has important geometric consequences. Given a variety with non-reductive automorphism group we construct a canonical filtration of its coordinate ring. We show that the corresponding weight is negative in several examples, and conjecture this holds in general. Little to no knowledge of algebraic geometry will be assumed for this talk. This is joint work with Giulio Codogni.
