The maximal subgroups of the finite exceptional groups of Lie type have been studied for several decades. For the small ones, explicit lists are known, but for the large ones (F4 and above) a complete list is not know. In this talk I will summarize recent joint work with Kay Magaard and Chris Parker that goes some way to completing this classification project, for all the exceptional groups except for E8.

This talk is part of the Algebra and Representation Theory Seminar series.
