Abstract: the (Riemann-)Schottky problem is that of describing the moduli space M_g of genus g
curves inside the moduli space A_g of g-dimensional abelian varieties. One classical approach is
to seek modular forms on A_g that vanish on M_g. We shall explain why there is no such form that
survives for every genus.
