The Lie algebra g_2 not only occupies a special place in the classification of complex simple Lie algebras, it also gives rise to an exceptional geometry in dimension 7, known as G_2 geometry. In my talk, I shall introduce this geometry and discuss some of its basic properties. Time permitting, I shall also talk about a second, less well-known, exceptional geometry in 7-dimensions.

This talk is part of the Junior Geometry Seminar series.
