I will discuss joint work with Bell, Diller, and Jonsson in which we construct birational maps of 3-d projective space which have transcendental dynamical degree, providing counterexamples to a conjecture of Bellon-Viallet. The constructed maps preserve a torus-invariant volume form, and we will discuss the algebraic stability and dynamical degrees of such maps more generally.
