We discuss the approximation of data from one- and two-dimensional
curves using total variation-based techniques. Our aim will be to
minimise complexity among all functions which satisfy a criterion for
approximation. Complexity will be measured by the number of local
extreme values or variational properties of the functions. Our criteria
for approximation will be based on a multiscale analysis of the
residuals.
