The n-gonal construction associates to an étale double cover of an n-gonal curve a new curve of gonality 2^n. For n = 2,3,4 the Prym varieties and Jacobians of the input data and the output are closely related. In an ongoing joint project with Dmitry Zakharov we are describing a purely tropical analog of this construction. In this talk I will give an intuition about the construction as well as a motivating example that suggest a strong connection to Prym varieties.
