If you have a question about this talk, please contact Dhruv Ranganathan. The Deligne-Mumford compactification Mbar_{g,n} of the moduli space of smooth marked curves is smooth with normal crossing boundary. In order to get an insight into its birational geometry, we may construct several different modular compactifications. I will discuss the geometry of isolated curve singularities of genus two, and one way of using them to replace genus two subcurves with few special points.
