We recall some classical facts about the mod-p dimension series of groups, and discuss their implications for diameters of Cayley (di)graphs of finite p-groups. As a particular case study, we examine the structure of the dimension series of certain groups of rooted tree automorphisms which generalize a famous group discovered by Gupta and Sidki. Based on joint work with Laurent Bartholdi.
