Spherical buildings are certain geometrical structures canonically associated with a large class of simple groups. In this talk we will describe buildings purely in graph theoretical terms and give a brief overview of Tits’s classification results for spherical buildings. Time permitting, we will also make a few remarks about the Bruhat-Tits classification of affine buildings and its connection to the theory of absolutely simple algebraic groups defined over a local field.
