Irreducible holomorphic symplectic (or hyperkahler) manifolds are higher-dimensional analogues of K3 surfaces. Their second cohomology (or dually, homology) carries a quadratic form (the Beauville-Bogomolov form) which is an analogue of the intersection form. Rational curves of negative Beauville-Bogomolov square are important for understanding the geometry of these manifolds, in the same way as (-2)-curves are for K3 surfaces. I shall survey some of our joint results with Misha Verbitsky on this subject.
