I’ll describe recent work which finds surface subgroups of certain graphs of free groups. When combined with the work of Agol, Wise and others, it follows that all cubulable hyperbolic groups have surface subgroups, unless they are free, answering a question of Gromov in the cubulable case. In particular, surface subgroups can be found in small-cancellation groups, and in hyperbolic mapping tori of free group automorphisms.
