In the birational geometry, the class of log canonical (lc, for short) pairs is a very important framework and a lot of results in the field of the minimal model theory are proved by using this class. In this talk, we will introduce an extention of log canonical pairs to arbitrary pairs of a normal variety and a divisor on it, which we call pseudo-lc pair in this talk. We will explain that all pseudo-lc pairs have small log canonical modifications and that some results on pseudo-lc pairs can be reduced to the log canonical case. We also introduce a model called log canonicalization, and give applications of the model.
