We will illustrate the versatility of Shannon entropy as a tool providing insight into central basic questions in several fields of pure mathematics, through four instances (among many more choices): the central limit theorem (probability), the structure of union-closed families (combinatorics), the structure of sets of integers with small sumset (number theory), and bounds on volumes of sets depending on those of their projections (geometry).
