Text Simplification: Where are we now, and where are we headed?

In Text Simplification, we attempt to make texts more accessible to different target audiences. Once a niche task with sparse contributions coming up every year, Text Simplification is now an ever-more-popular task due to a recent influx of new data and resources from research and industry. We present an overview of how lexical, syntactic and hybrid Text Simplification approaches have evolved throughout the years, highlighting modern solutions. We also discuss what lies ahead with respect to open problems and research opportunities, providing with a comprehensive guide to useful data and tools that can be employed in future work.
