Mathematical Challenges in Quantum Information
Long before their use in information theory, entropies have been introduced in thermodynamics. One may therefore wonder whether thermodynamics could also provide some guidance for the definition of one-shot entropies. It turns out that this is indeed the case: starting from an operational definition of entropy for thermal systems in the one-shot regime, we obtain a sensible entropy measure with applications in one-shot information theory. In particular, it automatically satisfies the data processing inequality and a chain rule. In my talk, I will show some recent advances as well as challenges of this research programme.
