We apply slow, steady shear to probe our soft materials in slow shear flow. The shear cell on the left is designed to be used with our confocal microscope. Together, this allows us to investigate microsopic structural changes in 3D real space under continuous deformation. We use this setup to elucidate structural rearrangements in strained glasses, and the nucleation and propagation of defects in strained crystals.
