Will Duckett’s talk will be on the DLR 3 -Car Enhancement project. The talk will focus on the innovative procedures developed by Gifford to minimise the strengthening requirements, including strain gauging and ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT) to improve the fatigue strength of welds. The use of strain gauging substantially reduced the amount of strengthening required and the UIT had significant quality and programming benefits for the contractor.

The talk will also cover:

•the assessment and design of strengthening for 28 bridges and viaducts, comprising 184 spans of varying construction type and approximately 3.5km of viaduct, including the specification of shock transmission units; •the design of the new viaduct at Delta Junction; •and the design of a widened bridge viaduct to support the new South Quay Station at Millwall Cut Dock.

This talk is part of the Engineering Department Structures Research Seminars series.
