It will be explained that the only theories compatible with four requirements are classical probability theory and quantum theory. The requirements are: (i) state spaces and subspaces with the same number of distinguishable states are equivalent, (ii) any pure state can be reversibly transformed into any other, (iii) states of bipartite systems are fully characterized by correlations between local measurements, (iv) all mathematically well-defined measurements are allowed by the theory.
