MHM - Modern History of Mathematics

In 1953, Oswald Veblen was arguably the éminence grise of the American mathematical community, a mathematician distinguished for his research, his service to mathematics both nationally and internationally, and his service to his country in two world wars.  Yet, in 1953, Veblen’s request for passport renewal was denied on the basis of the “allegation that for years [he] had been a ‘concealed member of the Communist Party.’ ”  This talk will examine the State Department’s case against him in the context of the Red-hunting of the McCarthy Era.

This talk is part of the Isaac Newton Institute Seminar Series series.
