DESCRIPTION:In 1953\, Oswald Veblen was arguably&nbsp\;the&nbs
p\;&eacute\;minence grise of the American mathemat
ical community\, a mathematician distinguished for
his research\, his service to mathematics both na
tionally and internationally\, and his service to
his country in two world wars.&nbsp\; Yet\, in 195
 3\, Veblen&rsquo\;s request for passport renewal w
as denied on the basis of the &ldquo\;allegation t
hat for years [he] had been a &lsquo\;concealed me
mber of the Communist Party.&rsquo\; &rdquo\;&nbsp
\; This talk will examine the State Department&rsq
uo\;s case against him in the context of the Red-h
 unting of the McCarthy Era.
