RSEs at UK Universities typically work on many and varied projects, from a short consultation to a many-year grant funding, with team sizes from lone coders to massive global collaborations. We also might be expected to work on more than one project at once, juggling different research domains and technologies alongside our day-to-day admin, meetings, line management, group leadership, outreach and countless other duties. I will review what “project management” is and isn’t according to different sources, highlighting some common challenges, and discuss progress in our understanding of what does and doesn’t work for the RSE style of work.
