EMGW02 - Applied and computational algebraic geometry In a series of seminal paprs, Aluffi and Faber computed the degree of the PGL -orbit closure of plane curves, extending the work of Enriques and Fano on PGL -orbit closures of points on a line. I will describe joint work with Anand Patel and Dennis Tseng that recasts these, and similar problems, using equivariant cohomology. As an application, I will obtain that the PGL -orbit closure of a general cubic surface has degree 96120. This talk is part of the Isaac Newton Institute Seminar Series series.
