This talk will be an exploration of the world of surfaces and their homeomorphisms. We will use train tracks on surfaces to set off on a journey that will include a safari in the land of simple closed curves and take us to the region of measured geodesic laminations, at the frontier of Teichmüller space. At the end of our voyage, we will gaze at the view from the peak of Nielsen-Thurston classification. No previous experience in topological rail travel is required.

This talk is part of the Junior Geometry Seminar series.
